March 24, 2017
Dear Parents,
This week we talked about spring and plants.  We began by discussing where we see plants - the different habitats that plants grow in.  Then we talked about the parts of the plant and we did 2 experiments: one where we looked at how the roots soak up the water in the ground and one where we saw how the stem sucks up water to take to the other parts of the plant.  Then we discussed what plants need to grow and we planted our own bean seeds.  We will keep our plants at school next week and watch them grow.  We will record the things we see in our plant journal.  We also worked on writing in story form.   We also finished this week discussing the story Jack and the Beanstalk.  In math, we reviewed covering pictures with pattern blocks, the different ways to make 10, and solid and flat shapes.  We worked on decomposing the numbers 13, 14, and 15.

Next Week

Theme: Culture                                                            Word Family: -ame, -ide, -ite,

Reminders

·      Be sure you have checked the culture sign-up to bring in an item for our culture day celebration.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Food can be prepared from home.  We have one food allergy – peanuts.  Please be sure your dish does not contain any nuts.  We will have food for students and adults that come.  However, remember we will have a variety of food, so even though you may need for 40 people.  You will only need small portions.  Food will need to be brought in on that day around 11:45. We will begin lunch at 12:00.  Then about 12:45/12:50, the students will present about each country.  We will go to the gym after that for a short parade and for grades to present something about one of their countries.  Once this is over we will be done.  I know it may make for a long afternoon, but it will be a good and fun learning experience for the kids.  I hope you can come and join us.
·      Your child’s assignment for their country needs to be sent in on Tuesday.  You can just print the pictures out and clip them together and put your child’s name on them.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
·      Friday will also be the end of the month.  We do not need Homework notebooks.  April’s calendar is behind March.  All you have to do is pull out March and it is there.  You do need to send in your reading logs if you do not do it online.  Reading logs should be sent in by Monday April 3rd.  Please put your child’s name on the log before you send it in.  This is the last month for the pizza certificates, but you do have a log for April, so you can continue reading.
·      Please do not forget that the fieldtrip money and forms are due on Thursday March 30th.
·      I still have a few more pages to take and develop pictures for on the kid’s memory books.  I am looking for anyone that is able to donate money or gift cards to Walgreens to help finish these last pages.  I know many of you are unable to do this with the many things we have going on already and I completely understand.  But if there are some of you that can help it would be greatly appreciated.  Any donation amount you can contribute would be great.
·      Easter is coming up soon.  Please don’t forget everyone needs to send in $6 by March 28th.to cover lunch for that day.  Also, send in at least a dozen prefilled eggs.  You can start sending your eggs on anytime.  All eggs should be in by Tuesday April 4th.
·      Congratulations to Ariana.  She received the most donations out of the whole school for jump rope for heart.  Way to go!!
·      Congratulations to Gabby for receiving the compassion value award this month.
·      On Thursday, the second graders are having a wax museum.  This is where these students dress up as a famous Americans.  Then when you put money in there cup they will tell you about themselves.  We will go visit the wax museum that afternoon.  For students to be able to have them speak they will need change.  There is no set amount.  Any amount is appreciated.  The money they raise will go to Lisa Brogdon, who is our speech teacher who was recently diagnosed with cancer and just had surgery.  Please send your donations/change in a plastic Ziploc bag.  You can either put your child’s name on the bag or put the bag in the money envelope.
·      Enrollment forms went home this week.  They are due April 7th.  A form needs to be filled out for every child. You should fill out a form for every child you have.  Please go ahead and fill them out and get them turned in as soon as possible.

Dear Parents,
This week we have finished up our unit on geography.  We finished up by discussing maps of the world that included the continents and major oceans.  We made a globe that the kids took home and in groups we painted a map that I have put up in the classroom. Then we discussed different landforms and physical land features.  We finished the week talking about groundhogs and Groundhog’s Day.  In math, we have been learning how to tell the time to the hour, measuring objects, and ordering objects.  This week we worked on decomposing the number 10.

 Reminders

·      Monday is the 100th day of school for kindergarten.  Students are to wear a shirt that has 100 items of anything on it.  They need to wear it to school that day.  Also, if they have any hugs written on their 100 hug sheet they can turn that in too.  Snack will be provided for that day, so students do not need a snack.  Please let me know if you would like to help Monday with some of our center activities.  We need volunteers to help from 8:15-9:35.
·      Be sure to check your child’s folder today.  There is info about an upcoming in-school fieldtrip and about graduation in there.

January 20, 2017
Dear Parents,
This week we have continued discussing our unit on weather.  We have been drawing the weather daily.  We have also been charting the temperature throughout the day to see how it changes over the time of a day.  We also talked about weather tools and wind.  We have discussed who Martin Luther King is and talked about all the things he did.  We also discussed other famous black Americans like Rosa Parks and George Washington Carver.  In math, we reviewed adding and subtracting, and working on decomposing numbers 6 and 7.  Students should understand that the numbers 1 & 5, 2 & 4, 3 & 3, 0 & 6, make the number 6, and that 1 & 6, 2 & 5, 3 & 4, 7 & 0, make the number 7.

The kids really enjoyed our “Frozen day.”  We did several activities before watching the movie Frozen.  We did a snowman glyph, we made a snowman with marshmallows, we wrote about building a snowman, and we learned about the states of matter – solid, liquid, gas.  It was a great day!

Next Week

Theme: Weather                                                    Story: Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Geography & Maps                                  Word Families: -og, -op, -ot
Nursery Rhyme: Diddle Diddle Dumpling

  • Next week our school is participating in “The Great Kindness Challenge.”  This is a week that schools are taking to discuss and perform as many acts of kindness that you can.  I will be discussing this with the kids on Monday.  There is a website you can check out that has a checklist of acts of kindness.  We hope to be able to do many acts next week.  I have picked 1 act each day to concentrate on.  We want to try to do that act as much as possible at school and at home.  Also, I thought a class project we could do was to collect items to donate to the local animal shelter.  I talked with them and they accept donations ranging from food for the animals they rescue, beds, cleaning supplies to clean pens like Clorox wipes or other cleaning items, monetary donations, and anything animal related.  I would like for every student to bring in any of these items next week.  We will collect items all week.  Then Friday, the items will be taken to the animal shelter.  I will be happy to take them, however if there is anyone who would like to take it with their child on Friday, please let me know.
Acts of Kindness:
Monday – Pick up trash outside
Tuesday – Smile at people
Wednesday – Hug your friend or sibling
Thursday – Give someone a compliment
Friday – Say thank you to others

Reminders
  • Scholastic orders are due on Monday January 30th.  Be sure to take a look at all the great books they have.
  • We will only check out library books when we go to library on Tuesday’s.  I will only collect books on Monday’s and Tuesday’s.  She only wants to take them on Tuesday and I do not want to keep them in the room for a long time.  So if you sent yours in this week on a different day, I just left it in their book bag so they could keep it until next Monday.
  • If you did not send in your homework notebook today, please send it on Monday so the new sight/spelling words can be added.
  • Be sure to check your child’s folder for a letter about the 100th day of school.  It is coming up soon and the kids can make a shirt for that day.
  • Be sure to check the volunteer calendar for open times.  Our school will have some visitors the following week coming to observe our school and what we are doing.  Every so often you have to go through an accreditation process.  We have done this before and this is kind of like renewing it.  Anyway, they will be coming by our classrooms on the 30th or 31st.  I would really like to have 2 volunteers for the 30th during literacy centers to allow things to run more smoothly.  Please let me know about any days on the calendar that you can volunteer.
