October 10, 2014

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about seasons and fall.  We talked about many things that go along with fall – the weather, how things look outside, how leaves change colors, and how animals begin to prepare for winter.  We walked outside and looked around for signs of fall and collected some fall leaves.  Then we discussed how the leaves don’t change color in the fall they actually turn back to their original color because the leaf stops making chlorophyll.  Then we talked about properties of leaves and looked at some of the different leaves.  We learned some new words like migration and hibernation with animals.  In math, we worked on sorting leaves, learned the words wide and narrow, and worked with patterns.  We have had a busy week.  We had some community helpers visit us today.  The kids got to see the police, fire, and ambulance workers.

Each month we will celebrate a different character award.  These will follow our school values.  At each 9 weeks awards assembly for the traits we have been over, the students will get an award from the school.  We will do 1 trait each month.  September’s trait was respect and for October we will have communication.  At the end of the month, I will give our winner a little certificate and recognize them for the student of the month.  Our first award goes to Hung for our value respect for the month of September.  Congratulations to Hung.

Reminders

  • Keep sending in those box tops and other labels.
  • Don’t forget to send in your 3 different kinds of apples on Monday.  There is a sheet that was sent home about it this week.
  • I would like each student to send in a bag of Halloween candy.  It can be any kind just be sure it’s items that are individually wrapped you can send it in anytime next week or the week of Halloween.
  • Don’t forget if you want to order a Happy Meal for our Halloween celebration you can send the $3.50 in as soon as you want.
  • I have several that have not turned in money for the Scholastic magazines that I ordered at the beginning of the year and the $10 or $10 gift card to Walgreens for the photo developing.  All that money is due by Monday October 13th.  Please let me know if you need to know if you paid or not.  I do have a list.
  • You may have noticed that the Handwriting letters for homework do not match the ones that are mentioned on the newsletter for the next week.  This is because I teach them in class that week about those letters, so then the next week they should know how to properly write them.  So the letters they ae doing on Monday’s for homework they have been taught in class how to write.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t any confusion about that.

Dates:

Monday October 13th: Return books for Book-In-A-Bag

September 27, 2014

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about our families.  We learned about our family members and our family tree.  We talked about our siblings and who has brothers, who has sisters, who has both, and who is an only child.  We discussed the unconditional love that our parents and families show us and how we grow and change over time.  And we talked about how we have wants and needs. We talked about the differences between wants and needs and how our parents have to work so they can provide us with our wants and needs.  This week we finished up our book on “All About Me.”  The students have really enjoyed not only learning about themselves, but also about each other.  We sent home their All About Me book today.  We worked on the book throughout this unit, please review the information about themselves on the front cover.  The students should know their full name, address, telephone number, and age.  In math, we are continuing our work on numbers, shapes, and colors.  We also worked on the nursery rhyme 1,2 Buckle My Shoe.

Next Week:

Theme: Community Helpers                                                   Color: Purple

Story: Too Much Noise                                                           Shape: Triangle

Letters: E, F, G, H                                                      Nursery Rhyme: Old Mother Hubbard

Handwriting Letters: B, R, N, M                                           Little Fishes & I Caught a Fish

Numbers: 2, 3

Reminders:

  • Please remember to keep homework notebooks at home and return just the folder on Friday.  We will not take folders until Friday, unless your child is not going to be at school.  If you forgot to send in your child’s homework today, please send it on Monday.  We will keep a record of homework turned in.
  • Please remember that if you put your child’s books in their book bag, we will assume that you are done with them and ready to turn them in.  If you would like to keep them and not turn them in, then please keep them at home until you are ready to return them.  Please do not feel like you have to return them on Wednesday.  Please read over them several times before you return them.

  • Don’t forget to write down the books you read on the reading log.  You can also write down books you read to your child at night.  But do not feel you need to write down every single story book you read all the time.  Remember the goal is 100 books.  And if you write down the books from school and a few story books from home, you will easily make it to 100 books.
  • Your “All About Me” project is due on Friday.  Please help your child complete something for this project.  We will be sharing them in class on Friday.
  • Just wanted to remind you to have your child here by 8:10.  We begin putting up morning work by 8:15.  Depending on what time your child gets here will depend on how much of their morning work they do.  I do not check morning work, so you are welcome to finish any of this work at home.  You don’t have to turn this work in, please just keep it at home.
  • Everyone should have received the form for our fieldtrip in October.  Forms and money for the trip are due by October 3rd.  It is very important that we have everyone’s money turned in by then, so please go ahead and get that in!  Checks are to be made to NCS.  If you or an adult is going with the student, please go ahead and send in the money for both of you ($17).  I also wanted to mention that siblings are not allowed to go on fieldtrips.  This is the school’s policy and it is mentioned in the handbook.  I know this can create problems with you being able to go, but I have to remind you of what the school policy is.
  • Don’t forget to wash and return towels on Monday.

2014-2015 School Year

Mrs. Hodges' Kindergarten Class

It is almost time for a new year school year.  I will be posting more information soon.  For now, here are some upcoming dates.

Thursday September 4th: Elementary Open House
You can come from 3:00-5:00 or 6:00-8:00
Please come out and meet your child's teacher.  You can also
bring school supplies at this time.

Monday September 8: First day of School
But for kindergartners this will be the first day of testing.  Testing
will be from September 8-11.  Please be sure you check your
letter for your time to come for your appointment.  Appointments
will last from 45 minutes - 1 hour.  If you did not bring your
school supplies at orientation, then you need to bring them to
  this appointment.

Friday September 12 & Monday September 15:  Your child will
only come on one of these days.  We will have 9 students on
Friday and another 9 students on Monday.  We begin with a small
group of kids, so we can give them more attention and get them
more acclimated to their first day of school.  It is a regular school
day from 8:15-3:35, so students will need a snack and a lunch.  If
your child's scheduled day to come is Friday, then they will come
all day Friday and not come at all on Monday.  If your child's
scheduled day to come is Monday, then they will come all day on
Monday and not come at all on Friday.

Tuesday September 16:  All kindergartners will begin this day

I look forward to meeting everyone at Orientation!
