October 7, 2016
Dear Parents,
This week we talked about seasons and fall.  We talked about many things that go along with fall – the weather, how things look outside, how leaves change colors, and how animals begin to prepare for winter.  We discussed how the leaves don’t change color in the fall they actually turn back to their original color because the leaf stops making chlorophyll.  Then we talked about properties of leaves and looked at some real leaves.  We learned some new words like chlorophyll, pigment, migration and hibernation with animals.  We also began learning about apples.  In writing, we are continuing to work on writing short simple sentences that mostly begin with I like.  Please be sure to practice simple sentences at home.  Testing will begin next week.  Students should be able to write 1-2 sentences to go along with a picture they have drawn.  Please be sure to review all sight words that we have been over so far and feel free to look at all of the words in the list.  I will not begin testing sight words until the middle of next week, so students should know all of their words up through next week.
We also talked about bullying this week.  The kids enjoyed the activities and shows we watched against bullying and they enjoyed making their t-shirts.  Today, we read the poem, which is on the heart in their folder, at an assembly in front of the school.  It has been a very fun and eventful week!

  • Next Friday, October 14th is an Early Release Day.  Our dismissal will be at 11:45. On early release days we do not have lunch.  I know most parents will pick up their kids, but I know some go to daycare.  If you’re child goes to daycare for the early release day, please let me know if you would like your child to eat lunch at school.  It is not a problem for them to eat before they leave.

Help/Needed
  • I would like to do caramel apples next week during our apple unit.  I would need about 3 bags of caramel, sweetened condensed milk and some heavy cream.  Also, enough aplle juice boxes for everyone.  If anyone also has any ideas for a few toppings, please let me know.  If you would like to help send in these items, please just email me and I’ll let you know if I have gotten any volunteers yet.
  • On October 20th we will be carving pumpkins, I need 3-4 volunteers that would like to come in and help.  We will be carving from 8:15-9:30. Please let me know if you would like to come in and carve. I will also need pumpkins to carve, so if you can come and bring a pumpkin to carve let me know.
  • When we start our unit on Thanksgiving we will be making Indian vests.  I will need each student to send in a tan pillow case.  Sometimes when we get close to November they can be hard to find and I have to get them cut and ready, so I will need them sent in by October 28th.  Please feel free to send in the pillowcase any time.
